Formerly named Milltown, the town is the centre of a thriving farming and forestry district, with wool milling the main industry.

The Tokomairiro River flows through the southern end of town and down to the coast to meet the Pacific Ocean at the tiny seaside settlement of Toko Mouth. Also on the coast, but further to the northeast, you can find Chrystalls Beach and Bull Creek – a quaint seaside settlement.

Milton is close to both Dunedin and Balclutha, gateway to the Catlins, and is an ideal stopover on the way to Southland, Central Otago and Queenstown. Inland, you can find Lawrence, an historic goldmining town with a fascinating past, and a little further afield the Tapanui district’s Blue Hills, famed for recreational deer and pig hunting. There are wonderful opportunities for salmon and trout fishing in the lakes and rivers of the district.
